Waterworld
Two-thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by water. But during typhoons, it’s definitely more than that.
1. USA, 2005
Two men paddle in high water by the bridge crossing the Industrial Canal to the Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. The total damage from Katrina is estimated at $81.2 billion (2005 U.S. dollars).
2. Philippines, 2009
Philippine residents go to all lengths to escape neck-deep flood waters. On September 26, 2009, Typhoon Ondoy brought a month’s worth of rainfall to Metro Manila and nearby areas in just a few hours, causing severe flooding which resulted in the loss of many lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
3. China, 2011
A driver wades through floodwater after his bus was stranded in a flooded tunnel in Wuhan, Hubei province. More than 5 million people have been displaced or otherwise affected by the flooding in eastern China, June 2011.
4. Pakistan, 2010
Families carry belongings, searching for higher grounds. Flooding in Pakistan has displaced more than 20 million people
5. Thailand, 2011
Ancient Buddhist temples, whole streets, and even elephants have been submerged by waters in Thailand’s worst floods in half a century.
